This was another big project from last semester! The theme was frame and context. I already talked a bit about this earlier, but my basic idea was how women have been ‘framed’ by their sexuality in art over the years. I chose a very old image (the bodies are based on ancient roman sculptures) and a more contemporary figure of Marilyn Monroe. Instead of choosing someone even more recent I thought Marilyn was a good choice because she’s soooo recognizable, and was consistently marketed as a sex symbol and I think not really taken seriously as a person. Her presence is meant to frame the bodies as sexual whether that is what the artist intended or not. I wanted this to be a statement about how women and women’s bodies have been portrayed in media for over two thousand years, I hope this came across.
Medium is charcoal and ink on strathmore paper…. the heads are taped on.
these are actually from last year… one is a self-portrait from a photo, the other is what I imagine I will look like in old age! I’m scared of aging less because I will look older and more because I will just… BE older.
Both ballpoint pen on 15x22 stonehenge paper.
